Critical Thinking RR #2 12/3/13
Throughout the book Divergent by Veronica Roth, there is a lack of cooperation amongst the factions side from Erudite. This is also occurring amongst Tris and her allies. The text is trying to show how working against each other make everything worse. It shows what the negative effects are of such actions.
An example of this would be when Tobias is arguing with Tris. This is after Tris admits that she killed Will while he was under the simulation to Tobias, but also in front of all the Candor. Then, Tobias confronts Tris on the subject which lead to a full out argument. " 'Sometimes', he says quietly, 'it isn't easy to be with you Tris'. 'I'm sorry,' I say, all my anger gone... I watch him walk away. I feel like a space has opened up within me..."(pg.161-162) I fear if Tris and Tobias continue like this, it'll tear them apart. Tris needs Tobias. He is like the only thing that's keeping her in control and balanced. Without him, Tris would be lost and alone.
The factions opposing the Erudite, have also encountered this problem. " 'We don't need you as an ally,' Tori says. 'We're Dauntless!' The entire crowd presses forward at once- the Candor in the corridor yell and dive out of the way as we spill into the hallway..."(pg.278) When the Dauntless murder their former leader Eric, the Candor find out. Candor tries to keep them in their compound and threaten to join Erudite if they didn't. Still the Dauntless left. This may be bad because this only makes Erudite's army bigger while Dauntless stay small.
The fighting has also close relatives of theirs, like Tobias and his mother. He's become so desperate for help, he is asking the factionless now for help. But Tris doesn't think Tobias should trust them. " 'This is not about him!!!' 'Of course it is! He knows things Tobias. And we should be trying to find out what they are.' 'He is a liar Tris!' 'Yeah, well so is your mother!"(pg.294) They need Marcus and Tobias knows it too, but he doesn't want to admit it. His anger for Marcus has clouded his better judgement.
The constant fighting is causing people to turn their backs on each other. And when they already have a thing against the person, it's worst. They begin to not trust them anymore. Hopefully, Tris and the gang will figure this out and work together. If they don't, then no one's gonna survive the Erudite's tyranny!

Reading Response 12/2
A consistent conflict I notice throughout the book "Divergent" by Veronica Roth, is trust. It seems that Tris isn't sure who to trust. Just when she gets comfortable or trusts someone, she ends up getting stabbed in the back. It's even like this between her and Tobias! But, they aren't the only characters going through this.
There is a consistent hint to a lack of trust in Tris and Tobias's relationship. Here is an example from page 159. " 'I wish you trusted me enough to tell me things like that.' I do trust you, is what I want to say. But it isn't true- I didn't trust him to love me despite the terrible things I had done. I don't trust anyone to do that, but that isn't his problem; it's mine." This was after Tris confessed she killed Will during the simulation attack. After, Tobias confronts her about relying on each other for trust.
These aren't the only characters with the same issue. Earlier, on page 25, Johanna tries to persuade Tobias's father Marcus, to tell her of the information the Erudite were trying to find. " 'The last time I trusted a faction representative with this info, all my friends were murdered'...' In order to have peace, we must first have trust', says Johanna. 'So I hope you change your mind.' "
Trust is a very complicated topic, it happens everywhere in the world. People always struggle with who they can rely on. That's why it's good to have someone who is trustworthy. Banned Book Draft #2
Schon Gonzalez 2nd Draft “Banned Books Essay” 11/16/13
Many schools and adults are trying to ban young
adult books. They believe that these books contain “inappropriate content” and are
negatively affecting children’s minds. They consider The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton to be
one of them. But I disagree. The Outsiders teaches valuable life lessons like not to take
your childhood for granted, or that everyone’s the same. Also, even if the book gets
banned, that’ll just make kids want to read the book more. So why even try to ban the
book?
The Outsiders shouldn’t be banned. Many adults believe
that banning books like this will prevent teens from reading this book. It actually won’t
because it just encourages teens to read them even more. In the article “The Banned
Books We Have Loved”, by Jen Doll expresses “…book sensors don’t seem to have
realized: banning books doesn’t, in fact, hurt them much at all. If anything, it may even
inspire more interest in them, and sometimes sales, too.” (p.2) It’s so obvious, even
authors are taking notice. R.L. Stine the author of the series “Goosebumps”. This is a
quote from R.L. Stine, expressing his feelings on when his book was #15 on the top 100
books that should be banned: “It is a badge of honor to have people try to ban your books
from schools and school libraries… usually they prove to be good publicity.” (p.2)
Banning books just gives kids another excuse to read the book.
Another reason why The Outsiders shouldn’t be banned is
because it teaches valuable life lessons. One of those lessons is to not take your childhood
for granted and to enjoy it. Hinton expresses this moral through one of the characters
quotes in the book. “…you’re gold when you’re a kid, like green. When you’re a kid,
everything’s new, like dawn. It’s just when you get used to everything it’s day.” (p.172)
Another life lesson this book teaches is how everyone is equal and is going through the
same thing. “ “I’d help if I could”, I said. I remember Cherry’s voice. It’s rough all
over. I knew then what she meant.” (p.117) This scene is when Ponyboy is talking to a
social named Randy who plans on leaving town because he didn‘t want to fight or let the
socials down. Here, Ponyboy realizes both classes (Greasers and Socials) encounter the
same problems everyday.
Sadly, many adults oppose these young adult books like
“The Outsiders”. They believe that it’s a negative influence on the child’s mind. Many
believe that these books as the article “Darkness Too Visible” expresses it “Puts children
in dark state”. (p.2) Tanish Carey, publisher of “Sick-Lit Books”, believes the same thing .
This quote from her article states “ I know a girl of 12 in whose class the book (Red
Tears) spread like wildfire- several of them also started cutting themselves…” (p.2) But
the truth is that’s not what young adult books are doing to the youth. If anything, it’s
helping those who are in bad habits, such as cutting themselves. This is a quote from Phil
Earle (author of “Saving Daisy”) in the article “Sick-Lit Books”. “When young people are
lost in such traumatic states, it’s vital they don’t feel alone… novels and stories on the
subject offer a sense of commonality and, most importantly, a sense of hope”. (Carey, p.3)
There’s also the possibility that the adults are overreacting. In the video “Book Under
Fire”, it talks of a school trying to ban “Fahrenheit 451”. Some of the parents like Alton
Vern, along with his daughter Diana Vern believe it’s “downgrading Christians”. They
were also offended by a scene where the characters burn the bible. But seriously! This is a
book that’s been out for more than 50 years with no complaints of it’s contents. So why
start now? Also, the books fictional, so why get offended by the bible getting burned? It
isn’t real and isn’t a real conspiracy to be made a big thing out of.
The Outsiders should not be banned. It produces great
lessons and give kids the positive idea about how they should act. I understand adults are
trying to protect the children from negative influences. But there’s nothing bad in the
book. And no matter how hard they try, the kids will always get around to reading the
book. So please, leave the book be, and let children enjoy the excitement of reading.

My Favorite Picture Book
My favorite picture book is Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? by Bill Martin Jr. . I like it because I've grown up reading this book throughout my childhood. It was one of my favorite bedtime stories. The book's very inspirational and teaches a lot.
The book is also teaching the young readers. Throughout the dialogue, the author is using very verbal words. These words described the animals sounds like roaring, snorting, and fluting. The book gives children an early idea for what verbs are. Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? also teaches kids what to expect to see at the zoo.
I always see my mother read this book to my baby sister. Every time, I can't help but think someday, my sister will be able to go to the zoo. The book shows the perspectives of all the animals in the zoo. The book also uses the sense of sound in the context as well. I believe this is the kind of stuff that makes the book so interesting.

Schon Gonzalez "Summary" 10/9/13 In the book "Quantum Prophecy book 1" Colin is a very smart kid who also has a lot of will power. He knows how to handle situations. Colin can even keep his cool when it seems like the situation is hopeless. He is a quick thinker.
Colin has a lot of will power. Colin knows when to or not to act. (p.100) "He still had the $10 Marie had given him, but despite hunger gnawing at stomach- he refused to let himself buy... donuts from café." This shows Colin uses will power. He valued the money and ended up saving it. This money may benefit him later on in the book.
Colin is also a very quick thinker. He knows how to keep his cool in any situation. (p.113) " 'I was...' Colin was tempted to say 'abducted', but that could lead to a whole new set of problems. 'I was just separated from my parents." This proves he can keep cool in any situation. He's also smart and always has a strategy. Colin thinks ahead and searches for the best alternatives.

This young women, Malala Yousafzai, has become an iconic symbol for womens rights in Pakistan. But now, she is the symbol of miracles. Her story is of determination and resilience. She demonstrates "the female strength, sophistication and unwavering confidence..."
Malala has become an symbol of miracles. The reason is because of her vast and miraculous recovery. Malala was just coming out of school and was in a school bus. A militant group called Talibant had targeted Malala while she was on the bus. They had targeted her due to her speaking out against their actions. Malala had also spoken for promotion of women's education. The Taliban's had shot her twice in the head. Some say Malala had made a "miraculous recovery". This is because she had be flown to Peshawar and then to England to get medical attention. Some how Malala had made it. Her doctor Javid Kayani had stated "The fact she didn't die on the spot or short after is nothing to my mind but miraculous."
Malala had gained her position and respect through resilience and determination. It had began in 2009 when she sent an blog BBC Urdu Service about her life under Taliban rule and the lack of education for the women. Malala had stated in her blog "I wanted to speak up for my rights, I also didn't want my future to just be sitting in a room and be imprisoned in my four walls and just cooking and giving birth to children. I didn't want to see my life that way." Because of this blog, she is an international symbol for the women's rights of education.
In conclusion, Malala's determination and resilience got her through many things. She inspired many women to stand up for women's education in Pakistan. After this incident, it has inspired her to even work harder. That is why she is this Monday's muse. Now she is hoping to become Prime Minister of Pakistan. As the doctors had said "her recovery was not just a tribute to the quality of care she received- but also to her own resilience and determination."
